I think it was better then, because one was disciplined. Not like now – everything is a carnival. I never do the traditions and customs of Bolivia. I participated before, in my ignorance. I read the Bible [and] “I’m wrong,” I said. I’ve read the Bible for 15 years, or 12 years. That’s why I do not smoke cigarettes; I do not chew coca. If I ever go away with my car, I’m up all night without coca. Because what is coca? It is a vice. There are addicted people. They say that it calms the nightmares, the thirst. It’s a lie. I have tried and it didn’t help.
It’s just a tradition. They put confetti, they drink beer, asking the Pachamama for things to go well this year. According to them, it is part of God. In the Bible, it says in a passage in there, “You shall not worship false gods.” Yes, stay away from all those images. People bow before images. God is angry about that. I do not do it because it’s a trick of the devil. The Pachamama – what is known as ‘the Pachamama’ – is the devil himself, the unclean spirit. I do not participate in those things. – Don Dario
