[People] make art projects, but they talk about their memories and their childhood. They talk about these things. Yes, it’s still resistance, just not directly to the target. They don’t talk straight about it. Everything [is resistance]. If you’re a good learner in school, you’re resisting. If you take care of your home and your children and bring them up with a good psychology – not aggressive, not too quiet, they know their rights and you brought them up to be effective – that’s resistance. If you remove some rubbish and put it in the recycling bin, that’s resistance. But do you know the Maslow hierarchy? You need shelter first, and food. And you need the feeling of comfort and feeling of safety. And then you need self-actualisation, who you are. So safety and shelter comes first.

For example, in Ramallah, they destroyed [a family’s] house. In one day, Palestinians in a small area each paid one shekel, and they [rebuilt] their house. The house cost about 150,000. It was collected in one day. And that’s resistance. One shekel will not affect your budget. We are connected to one another. It’s a normal thing – we are family here. We are very connected here in Palestine. If your neighbour’s father died or something bad happened to them, you will help your neighbour with some money until they can live without any help. You will help your neighbour, and you will help your brother if he needs anything, and you will help your sister. Joining together makes life good, because the human feeling of belonging, that’s good. – Nizar
